Bike at bedtime : Enigma Retro… feat Campagnolo Delta brakes

A nightly trawl through the road.cc archive of cycling dreams. And the occasional nightmare. For best results eat cheese immediately after reading

It’s 2013, your intrepid road.cc reporter is wading through a room full of highly polished lugs and whatnots at Bespoked Bristol. There a big story on the Enigma stand where the rather nifty Evoke Ti disc is being launched, but his eye is inexorably drawn to the bike next to it a pleasing confection made from lugged Columbus steel tubing rather than Enigma’s more usual Ti, but what really drew his eye was those Campag Delta brakes…

Oooooh they’re cool, and so shiny, and they might even stop you (providing you had your trusty 3.5mm Allen key to set them up right, oh and maybe chucked the original pads in the bin and replaced ‘em with some modern ones).  So what if they’re not light either, did I mention how  they look?

Fair to say the Campagnolo Delta brakes divide opinion to this day. Some say 'they look really cool, what more do you want from a brake?' And some say, 'I want to stop'. People still pay upwards of £400 for a set, sometimes even when they know the answer to the 'do they work?' question posed on the road.cc forum back in 2010. Not sure what The Hatter paid back in 2010 - wonder if he still has ‘em?

Anyway, enjoy the ride and try not to have nightmares about stopping.

Tony's journey in cycling media started in 1997 as production editor and then deputy editor of Total Bike, acting editor of Total Mountain Bike and then seven years as editor of Cycling Plus. He launched his first cycling website - the Cycling Plus Forum at the turn of the century. In 2006 he left C+ to head up the launch team for Bike Radar which he edited until 2008, when he co-launched the multi-award winning road.cc - finally handing on the reins in 2021 to Jack Sexty. His favourite ride is his ‘commute’ - which he does most days inc weekends and he’s been cycle-commuting since 1994. His favourite bikes are titanium and have disc brakes, though he'd like to own a carbon bike one day.
