Mountain Mayhem start (Andy Armstrong)Road bikes come to Mountain Mayhem 2010
You don't have to be a mountain biker to appreciate that Mountain Mayhem is something special. Up until now though you did have to be one if you wanted to enjoy its unique festival atmosphere: not next year though, because the organisers are adding a new 100Km sportive in to the mix.
The 100Km Sportive will be a sportive with a difference – for Britain anyway. While it will be a challenge the aim is more to give everyone taking part a good day out on their bike more in the manner of continental sportives and randonees which are about enjoyment rather than trying to break you.
There are no details on the route yet but the location in the Malvern hills is superb and event organiser Pat Adams promises that everybody taking part will get to experience the beautiful countryside in and around the Malvern hills.
Entry to the sportive is £22 and online entry opens on the 31st of October. Each competitor gets a goody back, which Pat reckons will have around £21 worth of goodies in it including a top quality t-shirt and refreshments. Pat and his team are providing a special campsite for everybody taking part in the sportive, so you get the best of both worlds: all the facilities that go with a non-stop cycling festival without being kept awake by a 24 hour mountain bike race.
Mountain Mayhem itself is a massive affair attracting thousands of mountain bikers every year, road riders doing the sportive will be able to sample off of the festival's attractions and atmosphere in the main arena where manufacturers display there latest bikes and there are numerous food and refreshment stalls plus opportunities for a quick massage or to buy yourself some bike bits or enjoy the entertainment on offer on the main stage… you could make a weekend of it without even riding your bike. Bring the family too – that's what many mountain bikers do – it's a great opportunity for a weekend away in a great location with excellent camping facilities there's plenty to do for everyone and all the activities are free too.
So if you’ve always fancied the fun of Mayhem but you don’t want to ride off road, now’s your chance. The 100 KM Sportive takes place on Sunday 20TH June at 8AM, Mountain Mayhem itself runs from the 19th to the 20th. See you there!

Perhaps mjvande would prefer if we all bought souped up Porsche Cayenne 4WDs and went charging through his backyard as that is not a protected area.
Dont feed the troll folks - mjvande has been posting the same arguments for the past ten years and makes a hobby of winding mountain bikers up. Most people think he is actually a spambot of some description.
As a local walker and cyclist, welcome (back) to the Mayhem sportive. They did one in 2008 - I've got the GPX file of the planned route to prove it (maybe I'll upload it to my website for ref). Some great cycling country indeed. But 2008 clashed with something else so I didn't go check on the turn-out. Maybe this time.
Mountain Mayhem is a darn sight more eco-friendly than the Land Rover testing they do at times on other parts of the Eastnor estate!

Anyone who has ever been to Mountain Mayhem or knows of its existence knows that none of the rubbish you have spouted relates to the event, the organiser, the location and the people who attend. Crawl back into your antipodean hole until you can find something original and relevant to say.
Really interested in the sportive though, if its organised with the same level of quality and care as MM then I reckon Pat Adams is on to a winner.
Having lived in Worcestershire for a few years, and having many good friends there, I need an excuse to go back to the beautiful Malvern Hills and this could be just the impetus I need.
mjvande, you're confusing a lot of things:
1) the UK with the US
2) road.cc with a mountain biking website
3) mountain mayhem with mtbing on open trails
4) us with people who care about your rather bitter crusade, which basically seems to involve replicating this post on any website you can find that mentions mountain biking, relevant or not.
And what's that got to do with Mountain Mayhem exactly?
Well I hope it works, I really like the idea of a sportive that's about having a challenge and an enjoyable ride and the only time I've been to Mayhem I really enjoyed it. We will certainly give it all the support we can. It will be interesting to see who it will appeal to, I think they are trying to tap into a different type of sportive rider - there must be a fair few people that find a lot of the current crop pretty daunting for all kinds of reason. It will certainly be interesting to see how many people will chose to go there and camp, because some sportive organisers reckon that a lot of people who ride them want to simply come along, do the ride, and go home.
Will be interesting to see the response. When I was at SiTS I only saw a few road bikes about at there sportive, I was concentrating on the mtb race though.
