A cyclist has been filmed riding across three lanes of the M62 motorway in Liverpool – while towing a trailer of the kind typically used to carry small children.
The footage was passed to the Liverpool Echo by the lorry driver who recorded the incident with the dashcam in his cab.
It was filmed close to the Rocket junction in the city’s Broadgreen area, which marks the western end of the motorway, at around 4pm last Friday afternoon.
The cyclist can be seen moving from the fast lane towards the hard shoulder where he comes to a stop. It is not clear whether or not there was a child in the trailer.
The driver who took the footage told the newspaper: "I saw the cyclist at the start of the M62 and I just thought he was going to turn off somewhere.
"Then, I've seen him again in the third lane, and cars are stopping and putting their hazard lights on.
"It's shocking, to be honest. That part of the motorway usually has cars speeding up so fast.
"One lapse of concentration and he could have been killed. Motorists regularly go in excess of 70mph at that point.
"I'm not sure if he did realise he'd made a mistake you'd like to think so.
"I've never seen anything like that in my life," he added.
Cyclists are banned from motorways under Rule 253 of the Highway Code, although we have reported on numerous examples of riders ending up on such roads over the years.
Sometimes that is because of poor signage or ignorance of the law, and on occasions because they have been directed there by a sat-nav app on their phone.
Usually the cyclist will realise their mistake and make their way off the motorway, or be escorted to safety by police, but at times such incidents can have tragic consequences.
In 2016, we reported how a coroner in Hampshire had ruled that cyclist Simon Wagner had died as a result of an “unavoidable collision” when he was riding at night on the M3 motorway near Fleet Services and was hit from behind by a car being driven at 70mph.
Driver David Earl said he was using dipped headlines when he spotted Mr Wagner no more than 50 feet in front of him, giving him no time to avoid the collision.
