How far do you commute to work (by bike)?

OK, you have to do this regularly, it doesn't count if you have cycled to work once or cycled past your work on a weekend jaunt plus you have to cycle back the same day to where you started from. Also it has to be current, not 'back in the day'. It will be interesting to see if some of us cover the same route but have never met.

If you're new please join in and if you have questions pop them below and the forum regulars will answer as best we can.

12.5 miles each way each and everyday. I live in forest park in bracknell, Berkshire and work in Staines. Ride through ascot down to wentworth golf course then join the a30 pass Virginia water and follow through past egham to Staines. Love it, love it, love it. To spot me I wear road.cc arm warmers on a chillin morning!

About 13 miles round trip in London, adding cr*p drivers and poor air quality and the distance feels a lot longer certain days!

15 miles each way 5-6 days a week, even when its icy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mlbx16tPo0&feature=feedu) (fixed+marathon winters), and especially when its lashing down with rain (I have a secret love of cycling in the rain) legs get twitchy on my days off so do a 15 mile circuit on off days. DRL exposure (front) and dinotte (rear) lights on 24hrs 12 months. (http://www.reelight.com/Files/Billeder/downloads/SUMMERY_OF_RAPPORT_UK.pdf)

7-10 miles each way depending on route. Knaresborough to Harrogate longer route takes back road to Ripley/ Beckwithshaw (scenic route). As often as possible depending on the need for a car during the day for meetings. Work colleagues think I am strange but I don't care - love the bike! Just got a Hope Vision 1 for front and its awesome paired with a Cateye on strobe. Light it all up!

Between 12 and 20 miles for me. At least 4 days a week. Tends to be closer to 12 in the mornings (I like my bed!) then different routes on the way home. Like to mix up the route or it can get a bit mundane.

12 miles each way, two or three days each week. Rural location, no street lights for 11 miles. Journey of two half's, first six miles from home on main road, lorries 'n all, fairly flat, just two small hills. Second half, through three small villages, one big hill; much more fun. Coming home on that main road, the last 3 miles are a very gentle up ramp - worst part of the journey!

I heard of a Professor at Portsmouth Uni who lived in Lynmouth. Caught the ferry every morning across to Yarmouth on Isle of Wight, cycled full length of Isle of Wight to catch Ryde to Portsmouth ferry and cycled to the Uni. Not sure how far but definitely a great commute!! Must have taken hours though 39

I bike a pawltry 4 miles on Wed, Thur and Fri and eat the plant with a V8 Merc on Mon and Tues. Over the course of a week my petrol usage and carbon footprint is about the same as if I ran a fuel efficient car every day!! Can't bike every day ... children to deliver.

I have a feeling, and this is purely on people I know, but when they say 3-4 times an week. It is more like 2-3....at best.

I commute 15 - 18 miles to work, from Bishop's Stortford to Hertford, bike road or trail usually 3 to 4 times a week. Moving more to trail so I don't get run over by the idiots on the road. Use a Giant Talon 650 hardtail or my Kona Jake CX, so much off road fun and the routes I can vary considerably as with the distance.

3 days a week I work in one location and it's 1km. I just roll down the hill from my house to the town.

The other 2 days it's 12km as the crow flies but I usually extend this. Wednesday's commute home was a wonderful 73km.

3 days per week, 30km in from West Lothian to Edinburgh... but I'll usually get the train home. On Tuesdays it's to make it to the chain gang, and on other days I have football or laziness issues. Will do a couple of laps of Arthur's Seat at least once a week before getting the train too.

Roughly 28 miles each way and over the back of the South Downs Way. It can be a tough start to a Monday morning 4

I'm currently trying to do my commute by bike, only managing 2-3 days a week at the moment.

20 miles each way on a monday/tuesday
16 miles each way on a wed/thurs/fri as I park a bit closer to get back for the evening job.

Exeter to Copplestone along the horrible A377.

I have just seen an earlier comment from me dated 2011 asking if this is the longest active blog going on since 2009. Well it is still going! But instead of a 28 mile round trip I now do a 42 mile round trip, almost every working day all year round, complete with over 1000 metres of climbing 16
It is nearly always the best part of my working day, particularly riding up the Arlington zig-zags to the sound of Woodpeckers 16

Mine varies depending on time available. Normal morning commute is a 3.5km uphill blast from Leith to Waverley station, then the bike comes on the train with me to Bridge of Allan, from where it is a 6.5km ride to work. In the evenings I normally get off at Edinburgh Park and cycle home along the NEPN, which takes me up to 15.5km for the Edinburgh leg. However, if I have the time, I may ride to or from one of the intermediate stations, which can add quite a distance, and I'll be working up to riding all the way home (74km) at least once per fortnight, and I'm aiming to ride to and from work once per month over the summer...

My base commute is a hilly 5.5 miles into work, then a flatter 9.5 miles back

Plus taking the office post to the postbox after work (adds another mile or so).

Sometimes a trip to the supermarket after work too (adds another 2-4 miles, depending on which one).

It's sometimes the other way around, sometimes the longer route both ways, and sometimes the shorter route both ways.

(Wow - this thread really got resurrected by the recent software glitch, didn't it?)

10 km each way, but I often extend the ride home if the weather is nice and the mood takes me.

19.5km each way, from the Coast to Toon, 5 days a week. Avoid the Coast Road cycle Path like the plague, and found the Walkergate, Wallsend, North Shields river side route much quicker and quieter (less traffic lights too).

If I don't commute by bike, it just feels wrong. I do 7 miles each way every working day across the city of Glasgow from south to north.

Rare exceptions where I haven't ridden to work in the last year or so have been:

Gale force winds over 40 mph (3 days)
Post bone-breaking crash (7 weeks of torture)
Post getting very pissed the night before (surprisingly only twice)

At least 3 times/ week, usually 4 and occasionally 5.

Trowbridge, Holt, Kingsdown, Bath A4 then Bishopsworth (Bristol) either A4 and ring road or cycle path(extra 5 miles).

or

Trowbridge, Norton St Phillip, Wellow, Combe Hay, Dunkerton, Priston, Chelwood, Dundry, Bishopsworth.

Been doing this since April and am psyching up for the Winter…

I'll keep a look out for you, normally do Westbury, Trowbridge, Holt then onto Melksham to Devizes

Are you talking traffic or poor surface? (or both) either way the A377 is not the worst road in Devon is it?
I ride it when I fancy a flat ride (Barnstaple to Crediton), it seems not too bad when you do not have to share it with commuter traffic. Either way I am sure that Devon miles are longer than everyone elses 20

Im surpised more people on here are not pro. Judging by the amount of riding they must be doing! All year round too

Best be quick, darkness looms! Lights already on for entire journey in and the last bit of return leg. Joy oh Joy!

No, it's nice enough, but the surface is poor in places and the traffic is the main problem, it's 'undulating' between Exeter and Crediton and quite narrow, so little room for HGV's to overtake.

Have you tried the route via Redhills / Whitestone between Exeter and Crediton?
