How far do you commute to work (by bike)?

OK, you have to do this regularly, it doesn't count if you have cycled to work once or cycled past your work on a weekend jaunt plus you have to cycle back the same day to where you started from. Also it has to be current, not 'back in the day'. It will be interesting to see if some of us cover the same route but have never met.

If you're new please join in and if you have questions pop them below and the forum regulars will answer as best we can.

Have you tried the route via Redhills / Whitestone between Exeter and Crediton?

No, but I live the other side of Exeter (Cranbrook) so for me it would be better to head out to Silverton/Thorverton/Crediton, which is what I'm planning on doing to make the commute a little more enjoyable.

North-west Edinburgh to Edinburgh Park on the western fringes. Every working day come rain, shine, wind and high water (usually all on the same day ha ha ha). En route, I tow the kids (in the trailer) to their Grandma's on Wednesdays.

Workward route varies depending on weather/mood/bike, but anything from 5 miles (via 40mph dual carriageway) thru 9 miles (on cycle paths and quiet streets) to my summer maximum of 26 miles on rural roads. Sometimes over Corstorphine hill on knobbly tyres. Generally speaking I arrive at work and just want to keep going.

Homeward journey tends to be more mixed/direct/hurried, to make sure I'm home for the kiddies' bedtime. 5-7 miles on a variety of trunk and suburban roads. I miss the post-work rides in the Pentland hills on warm summer evenings.

I wish I could say it keeps me lean and fit. In fact, it lets me eat and drink too much without getting *too* house-sized.

Once a week, 38miles each way in 2 and a quarter hours. But I cheat and break it up overnight. It's harder going to work as there are 5 climbs steeper than 10% in the first 10 miles and another of 14% before halfway. Haven't done it for months due to a back injury, so when I start again it will take me 2.5hrs and break my spirit.

It is highly unlikely I will pass anyone else.

At the moment only about 5 miles each way normally! However I often have to work in other offices. One will mean a 25 mile each way & the other a 45 mile each way route (great for my sportive training - staying awake at work is another issue!!). Certainly not every day, and just waiting for the days to get a bit longer!!!

Four miles each way West London to Covent Gdn. Feeling a bit conspicuous at present as post the theft of an old wolf in sheep's clothing of bike the very new looking replacement just hasn't acquired any soul or personality or whatever it is that old loved bikes get.

I have cycled the 5 miles each way to work and back for the last 10 years on my trusty Dutch Sparta. Some days I do an extra 5-15 miles on top of that, depending on appointments etc. I normally use the car for about 20% of all journeys but for the next 6 weeks will be totally bike-dependent(I live in the countryside with 2 teenagers).
I am now addicted to my half-hour dose of fresh air and exercise in the morning and feel deprived when I don't get it.

with my new job I am doing 10miles each way, Balham to Canary Wharf via Tower bridge (I haven't braved the Rotherhithe tunnel yet). It seems to be a competitive route. Time to clip in and get serious!

have moved offices at SGC now, working 2km closer to home but as the weather is nice I have made my commute all scenic! Up through Pucklechurch, round the back of Yate...30km each way now! Lovely

7 miles on the heaviest hack bike ever and carrying panniers and Schwalbe marathon plus, a few good hills too.

Good workout too stomping up a few climbs.

Lets me keep up when riding with friends on weekends but using the roadbike then.

Thing is I'm changing jobs and will miss this short blast-some on road, some on light gravel track, singltrack and back on road.

It does have this really long walking speed hill (6mins at least) rest of the commute is not as hilly and takes 22 mins.

5 miles each way on A650 between Wakefield & Bradford. Fairly steady uphill to work and downhill on way home. Sometimes vary route home to take in some hills and extra distance but haven't once managed to motivate myself to extend the route in to work despite many promises.

recognise a couple of sames faces once or twice a week but only in opposite direction. Fitness def improved when first started (3 years back) but plateaud months ago and no lighter now than when i started!

10.25 miles each way every day. marlow to Burnham via Bourne End and Cookham. At the moment it is on a fixed (42X16 on 700c with 170 mm cranks giving a 692 gear) but, when I have the geared bike out, I occasionaly ride via Winter Hill allowing me to get a good climb in on the way to work.

8.5 miles each way from West London to EC2. Lovely part through Hyde Park, not so much fun through the City.

I do tend to chicken out if it's raining though. Can't stand cycling in the rain and am therefore obviously in the wrong country... lol

I ride every weekday 5 miles each way on probably the flattest route in Cornwall, either fixed on a 1983 Raleigh Record Sprint (52/20) or fixed on a Genesis Day One Cross (42/17) if the weather is dodgy as has full mud guards, more relaxed geometry etc. Worse thing is the windy, how can it be a head wind riding in then a head wind riding back? Wind sucks!!

What do you guys do about showers? I've just moved house to Chorley so my new commute will be 16.5 miles, so i'm going have to practise longer rides before I can do that. Do you guys have showers at your work? I'm starting a placement year at a company in Manchester tomorrow but i'm not sure if they do and I don't want to sit in an office smelling of a 16 mile bike commute lol.

Here's what I used to do when I had a long commute.

Have a shower before I left for work, and always rode in wearing clean kit - stale sweat is what smells. Then when I got there I washed as much of the sweat off as I could and waited until I had cooled down and stopped sweating (10 mins or so) before I got changed - on hot days giving myself a bit more of a splash with water and deoderant, kept at work for the purpose. Sounds a ffaf but actually it was easy. I suppose if you worked somewhere that you had to be suited and booted from the off you might want to go in early enough to cool down and change before the working day officially began.

11 miles in and 18 miles home. I ride every working day unless I'm off-site.

In the summer, on Fridays I try to get the home run up to 20 miles plus 1

20km inbound, usually a bit more on the return leg, 3 or 4 times a week at this time of year. But it is from one small market town to another so mainly (very) rural. Chapeau to you urban lads and lasses I couldn't hack that anymore.

7.5 miles each way, do it a couple of times a week, takes just as long as it would for me to drive and get the park and ride bus, plus i don't have to wait for the buses that often don't turn up or sit on a crowded bus when they do.

13miles, each way, 5 times per week. but, because its in the north east of england, my commute to college isn't exactly FLAT.

Around 11.5 miles each way which I do on average 1 or 2 days per week. It is sometimes difficult to organise the logistics of taking a child to nursery and getting my laptop and change of clothes and towel to work and occasionally travelling to meetings but I do love not sitting in traffic. I got knocked off by a woman on the school run which messed with my confidence in traffic so now I sort of take my time to enjoy it more. I have started to vary my route away from the main roads as fed up of motorists trying to kill me and although it maybe longer I can link a number of bridleways and towpaths together to make some journeys 7 miles off road (of-course using another bike for that).
